70 years after the death of an artist Music is automatically part of the Public Domain, this is true for most Classical Music, if it is From Bach, Beethoven or Mozart, all those Compositions are under Public Domain. However most of the recordings are much more recent, and also this recordings have a copyright (for recordings its mostly 50 years after its creation)
Musopen tries to get real Public Domain Classical Music, if you want to have a certain Piece of Music you can pay a part of its recording and the project publishes all its pieces under the Public Domain, which means you can do whatever you want with it. You can either donate for the general fund, or you can Bid for certain pieces.
Decide how much you would be willing to pay for a piece of music to be in the public domain (copyright free). We will combine your donation with others who want the same piece then find a professional to record and donate the work then add it to the website. And here is the Archive which is already quite large, with completly free music!
